Chapter Twelve

The first problem they encountered, after they returned to the Tanamount family farm, was that the farm was obviously abandoned. No one greeted them when they arrived, and the front door to the Tanamount tavern/inn/stables stood open. Which, in retrospect, Ryn realized he should have anticipated. He simply hadn’t known Ella Tanamount was an apostate.

Nephale emerged from the main house. “They left in a hurry, on foot, probably right after we rode off. Most everything they owned is right where they left it, so they took enough provisions for the road and probably the basics needed to camp in the wilds.” She looked to the west. “They can’t be far. My problem is, I don’t know what direction they went.”

Given the fact that Ella had fled with her family suggested she could still make a devil deal at any time, which could lead to the horrific future Nephale had lived through, she was calmer than Ryn expected. Or perhaps she was just so good at hiding her fear and rage from constant practice she presented calm. Either way, at least she was focused on the problem.

Ryn heard a nervous snort from Pebble. He patted and stroked the gelding’s side without really looking at him. Any lingering doubts anyone might have about Ella being an apostate had vanished like her family. No family would simply abandon their home, farm, and belongings unless they had no other choice... and they believed one of the mages who’d stayed at their tavern last night might have figured out their daughter could touch the Firmament.

Auri reined in at his side. “Prime, I have a concern.”

“Speak freely, Auri. I always want you to do that with me.”

“Even inadvertently, I fear we may have instigated the very event we sought to stop.”

He grimaced as he understood. “Until we arrived, Ella had no need to make a devil deal. She and her parents were safe. So us showing up might be what convinces her to beg help from a devil in the first place.”

“It is one disturbing possibility.”

“So that just means we need to find her before she makes her deal and arrest her.” He looked around at his auxiliaries. “Suggestions?”

Auri frowned thoughtfully. “Had we a drake rider, a few circuits in the area would locate our targets. Given we have no eyes in the air, I would suggest we split up and search in all directions while remaining in touch over our mage bond.”

“That means I’m stuck here, doesn’t it?”

Nephale walked over. “Why would he be stuck here?”

Auri looked at Nephale. “Mage bonds become weaker over distance. As—”

“No, they don’t,” Nephale interrupted. “Or, wait. Is that another ‘your world’ thing?”

“Perhaps it is,” Auri said calmly. “Ryn is the common link in all our bonds, and the ability to communicate over a bond weakens with distance. Therefore, it would be best if he remained equidistant from us while we search in all directions for Ella’s family. Were Ryn to join any of us, he would soon be too far from his other auxiliaries to communicate with them.
